AI Is My Window Into My Own Biases

Originally written in Traditional Chinese: 我是一個偏見很重的人:AI 不是幫你免除偏見,是讓你多一個地方檢查它

"I am a person with really heavy biases." That is how I explained my AI note-taker at lunch in Tokyo.

On day one of my Minerva Immersion Week, a new classmate asked about the small recorder on my table. I told him: "I can only hear what I want to hear and see what I want to see. AI can help me see the things I cannot see. This is my bias mitigation tool."

I use the Johari window. One pane holds what others can see about me but I cannot: my blind spots. I ask AI to read the full transcript of my day and act as that pane. That night, it pointed out several things I had missed.

But it had blind spots too. Two Japanese colleagues could only stay for the first few days. After reading two days of recordings, the AI warned me I still had not exchanged contacts with them. In fact, they had already added me on LinkedIn. A recording cannot hear that. AI can only conclude from the data it is given.

The part that made me blush was mine. They had added me, and I had not noticed. They waited hours. Throughout my Minerva MDA, I never missed or was late to a single class, yet for them those hours were a kind of lateness, just in a place I was not watching. I need to fix that.

So, to be clear: AI can be your window, but a window only shows what you let it see. Biased data gives biased conclusions, and it cannot check the inbox you ignore. AI does not free you from bias. It gives you one more place to check it.

Try this after your next meeting or class. Give your notes to AI and ask: "What might I have missed? Which data is your conclusion based on? What could this record not capture?" And if you record with AI, ask first: "May I record this to help me take notes?"

I use AI this way because at Minerva we practice noticing our own biases every day. The MDA taught me to doubt my data before deciding, and World Wise shows me the same habit in leaders I admire. Application links for both programs are in the first comment.
