Chatting With AI Is Not Using AI

Originally written in Traditional Chinese: 聊天,不是用 AI。把工作交出去,才是

My take: chatting with AI is not the same as using AI. The real line is whether you can hand off a piece of work.

Most of us meet AI through a chat box. Type, press Enter, wait for a reply. Many people have been standing in that box for a year and think they are already inside.

This week my friend of nearly 20 years, Chang Hsiu-hsiu, launched a new course (in Mandarin) on building your own team of AI agents. Its title literally says: step out of the chat box. When I was a guest on his show, before the course even existed, I told his audience to remember to buy it.

On that show I described layers of AI users. The one that worries me most says, "Sure, I chat with ChatGPT every day." That is a long way from really using AI. The next layer integrates different tools.

The data points the same way. Anthropic's Economic Index report, published in September 2025, found that directive conversations on Claude.ai, where users hand a complete task to AI, rose from 27% in late 2024 to 39% in August 2025. For the first time, automation exceeded augmentation.

My own example: I once had a talk at noon and decided at 10 a.m. to rebuild it. I worked through the content with Claude over many rounds, then used ChatGPT to generate the slide images. Two hours, from a new idea to something I could present. In the old days I would have finished a week ahead and not dared to touch it.

To be clear, handing work to AI does not mean you stop thinking. If your brain is not working while you use AI, you are doing it wrong. To hand off a job, you first have to break it down well enough to teach someone else: what needs research, what needs organizing, what only you can judge. That is exactly where Hsiu-hsiu's course begins: teaching AI one real piece of your own work.

He spent five months rebuilding his own workflows, handing research, organizing, and content repurposing to different agents, and earned Anthropic's Claude Certified Architect, Professional credential along the way.

If this resonates, sign up, then try this tonight: pick a task you repeat every week and split it into three columns. Finding information. Organizing and drafting. Judgment only you can make. The first two are what you can start handing off. The third is what you protect. Bring that list to the first lesson.

The chat box is not the whole of AI. It is the front door. Behind it is a team waiting for assignments, and the person assigning the work is always you.
